This page explains what we collect on kemalbrown.com, why, and what you can do about it.
Who we are
This website is operated by Kemal Brown, an individual (“we”, “us”). It is Kemal Brown’s personal website, and Kemal Brown is the “data controller” for the information described here. Kemal Brown is based in Kingston, Jamaica, and Jamaica’s Data Protection Act 2020 applies to how we handle your information.
Privacy questions: grow@kemalbrown.com
The contact and booking forms
If you use the contact form or the speaker booking form, we receive what you type: your name and email address, and, where you give them, your organisation, event date, location, audience size, format, topic, budget and message. We use it only to reply to you and, for bookings, to plan the event. We don’t sell it or share it for marketing.
How it works: the forms are handled on our website hosting and delivered to our team’s inbox by email through our email provider. A backup copy of each message is kept on our server in case an email goes astray. To block spam, the forms include a hidden field and measure how long the page was open before sending, and we keep a short-lived, scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address to limit repeated submissions. We never store your IP address in readable form for this purpose.
The newsletter and podcast updates
If you subscribe on the Author page, we keep your first name and email address to send you Today’s Cure, a free daily thought by email. If you ask to hear when the podcast launches, we keep your email address and email you only about the podcast. When you sign up, our team also receives a short email alert with your details.
Subscriptions are managed by our newsletter (email marketing) provider, which sends our emails and stores the list. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your details at any time.
If you subscribed on an earlier version of this site (for example, for the free e-book and weekly motivation), your email address and first name have moved to our newsletter provider, and our first email tells you why you’re receiving it. You can unsubscribe with one click.
Analytics and cookies
We don’t use analytics, advertising tools or cookies on this site, and the site stores nothing in your browser that identifies or tracks you. Fonts are served from our own server, not from a third party. If we ever add analytics or embedded media that set cookies, we will update this page first and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
Like every website, our hosting server keeps standard technical logs of each request (IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time). We use them only to keep the site secure and working.
Why we use it, and our legal basis
| Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Replying to your enquiry and planning a booking | Steps you ask us to take before an agreement, and our legitimate interest in answering messages |
| Sending the newsletter or podcast updates you asked for | Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time with the unsubscribe link |
| Keeping a record that you signed up or unsubscribed | Our legal obligations and legitimate interest in proving consent |
| Blocking spam and keeping the site secure (including server logs) | Legitimate interest |
We don’t make automated decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects.
Who we share it with
We use trusted service providers for hosting, email and newsletters. They process personal information only on our instructions. You can ask us for a current list of the providers we use by emailing grow@kemalbrown.com.
- Our website hosting provider (United States) — hosts the website and the forms; keeps standard server logs (IP address, browser, pages requested, time) and the backup copies of form messages and sign-ups described above.
- Our email provider (United States) — delivers form messages and sign-up alerts to our inbox: what you typed into the form, or your name and email address.
- Our newsletter (email marketing) provider (United States) — sends our newsletter and podcast emails and stores the subscriber list: your email address, first name (if given) and email opens and clicks.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it. We never sell or rent your personal information, and we never share it with others for their own marketing.
International transfers
Our hosting, email and newsletter providers are based in, and process data in, the United States and may use facilities in other countries where they operate, so your information may be processed outside Jamaica. Where the law requires it, including Jamaica’s Data Protection Act 2020, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the providers’ data processing terms and, for visitors from the EU/EEA, the UK or Switzerland, the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US / UK–US Data Privacy Framework where the provider is certified.
How long we keep it
- Enquiries and booking requests: up to 2 years after our last contact with you, then deleted, unless a booking leads to an agreement we must keep records of for longer.
- Backup copies of form messages and sign-ups on our server: up to 12 months, then deleted.
- Spam-protection records (hashed IP address): about 2 days.
- Newsletter and podcast subscribers: until you unsubscribe. After that we keep only your email address on a “do not contact” list, so we never email you again by mistake.
- Server logs: kept by our website hosting provider for a short period under its standard settings, for security and troubleshooting.
Your rights
Under Jamaica’s Data Protection Act 2020, and wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- Access — tell you what information we hold about you, why, and who receives it, and give you a copy.
- Correct — fix information that is wrong or incomplete.
- Delete — erase your information.
- Stop direct marketing — unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email, or by writing to us. We’ll act on it promptly, and in any case within 10 business days.
- Object — ask us to stop processing that is causing or is likely to cause you damage or distress.
- Withdraw consent — for the newsletter or podcast updates, at any time. Withdrawing consent doesn’t affect anything we did before.
If you are in the EU/EEA, the UK or Switzerland, you also have the rights to restrict processing and to data portability.
To use any of these rights, email grow@kemalbrown.com. We may need to confirm your identity first. We will respond within 30 days.
Complaints
Please contact us first so we can try to put things right. You also have the right to complain to a regulator:
- Jamaica: the Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) — oic.gov.jm.
- EU/EEA: your local data protection authority.
- UK: the Information Commissioner’s Office — ico.org.uk.

Security
We use reputable providers, encrypted connections (HTTPS) and limited access to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, but we will tell you and the regulator if a breach affects you where the law requires it.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll tell subscribers by email.
